My name is Anna Kuptsova. I'm a professional illustrator and creative designer. I'm fortunate enough to combine my passion for art with my illustration work projects. I work as an Art Director for an advertising agency, and mostly devote myself to creating art for my clients and myself in my free time. I also run a blog where I share art tips & tricks, advise, inspiration and more.

What got you into illustrating?

I was always interested in creating art. It fascinated me since my childhood and eventually I realized this is exactly what I want to do in my life. This was the reason I chose to get a degree in Graphic Design and Illustration and start my career as a designer.

What kinds of commission requests do you usually get?

I get all kinds of commission requests to be honest. Some people need a cover for their book and illustrations for the novels. I also receive requests for editorial illustrations from magazines as well as album covers from music artists, and even movie posters from filmmakers. And of course there is always a demand for custom website elements and illustrations for hero banners.

We noticed you have a great dedicated blog with tips & tricks, reviews and so on. What inspires you to come up with the different topics for your readers?

I've been working in a creative sphere for the most part of my adult life. Through all these years I've accumulated enough experience & knowledge that I now love to share with others. And I believe that it could be helpful for other aspiring artists in their pursue of creative careers or simply in getting better. I choose the topics for my blog posts that I think my readers would be interested in and would benefit from. The ideas come up to me naturally from what I'm being involved in at the time.

What work/project are you particularly proud of?

Recently I've created an illustration to raise awareness of Australia wildfire tragedy. Those events had a great impact on me personally, so I expressed my emotions and feelings through this particular artwork. I'm grateful that it resonated with many other people who saw it on social networks.

We noticed that you like to sketch a lot of portraits. Tell us a bit about your thought process while you sketch faces/humans.

When it comes down to drawing portraits, I try to choose an interesting angle that would fit the composition and help me to communicate the artwork's mood.

Do you have setup or workspace ideas you can share? It could be an inspiration for illustrators to get their creative juices flowing. Feel free to share an image with us if you like!

Personally I prefer minimalist approach to workspace organizing. A wide table (that can handle numerous coffee cups :) ) and a comfy chair is a must for me, because as an artist I usually spend a lot of time at my PC. However I've been creating a lot of my artwork using Procreate on iPad and for this I don't really need a dedicated setup, a comfortable couch will definitely do the trick for me.

What's your design process, and what tools do you use for your work?

As a rule I start by making rough sketches. If it's a commissioned work I do spend more time on them to show my client a more polished version. When I'm satisfied with how it looks or when it gets approved I start drawing the illustration. I prefer making my sketches in Procreate an I also create the main body of work in it as well. But the final touches I leave for Adobe Photoshop. Of course there are some projects that require using other specific programs like Adobe Illustrator, Adobe After Effects etc.
